Tara Technologies Helps Power Pratt & Whitney Rockeydne and NASA “To The Moon”
June 23, 2009
Tara Technologies Corporation, headquartered in Daytona, FL, remains an instrumental partner in advancement of key propulsion technologies for use in space applications. As evidenced by the AV-020 with the LRO/LCROSS spacecraft which was successfully launched this evening, 6/18, in spectacular fashion. The Range went to "green" opening the door for liftoff and with the flawless performance of both the RD1 8 0 and RL10 propulsion packages, AV-020 delivered the NASA payload as planned. Tara Technologies Corp is proud to be a key technology supplier of critical bellows assemblies which help enable the success of this launch and program. To date, Tara has supplied over 400 key products that have enabled space exploration throughout the years.
About 45 minutes after lift-off, the LRO spacecraft separated from the Centaur upper stage in route on its four day journey to the moon where it will begin its lunar orbiting mission to map the lunar surface over the course of one year. In the meantime. the LCROSS spacecraft remains attached to the Centaur and is undergoing a series of tank blowdowns to reorient the stage and expel propellants to ensure no residual H2 or O2 remain in the tanks upon impact with the moon. The hydrazine-fueled RCS thrusters are performing numerous non-propulsive vent cycles to drain remaining fuel as well. Within four hours of launch, control of the centaur stage will be transferred to the LCROSS to maneuver itself for impact with the moon in about four months. Centaur impact is expected to displace 350 metric tons of lunar material and create a 13' deep by 66' diameter crater in search of H2O. Pow to the moon, Alice... Ralph Kramden would have been proud.
